The popular MetaMask self-custody wallet got a makeover , and with it, some major new features were announced. Some of these new features were more or less predictable, while others are more unprecedented.
Among the notable points in terms of user experience, we can highlight a default activation of Smart Transactions and the arrival of the ERC-5792 standard , allowing to group several transactions into one. In addition, the month of March will see the arrival of the possibility of paying transaction fees with any token, and not just ETH:
"First, we introduced gas-included swaps, so users can swap two tokens without having to hold ETH in their account: gas is included in their swap quote and is paid in the token they are swapping. Soon, in March, we will generalize this to all transactions, so to interact with dApps or send tokens, you will be able to pay gas with any token you hold."
Together, these 3 features have the potential to greatly improve the user experience and will be complemented by other interesting additions, such as the ability to manage multiple seed phrases on the wallet , compared to just one currently.

Arrival of Bitcoin and Solana
Until now, MetaMask was a Web3 wallet exclusively compatible with blockchains supporting the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), but that is set to change in 2025, with the upcoming integration of Bitcoin (BTC) and Solana (SOL) .
Regarding Bitcoin, let's note that rumors had started to appear in the spring of 2024 and that the arrival of this blockchain on the wallet is now planned for the 3rd quarter. About Solana, it will be added as early as May.
Another major new feature is planned for June. Again, this should greatly improve the user experience, this time regarding the management of different networks:
"Our CAIP-25 multichain API will allow dApps to connect to multiple networks simultaneously, whether EVM or not: a user will be able to connect to Ethereum, Linea, Solana, and Bitcoin networks simultaneously. This improves all kinds of use cases involving multiple networks, such as portfolio rebalancing, bridging, or deploying and managing tokens on multiple chains at once."
These are just a few points on the MetaMask roadmap , and other work is also on the agenda for yet unspecified timeframes, such as the ability to pay for subscriptions and customize different types of authorizations for token spending.
